Why South Africa first
Direct flights, tarred roads, English everywhere, world-class hospitals and the densest leopard viewing on the continent. It is the lowest-friction way to do a first safari.
Best months
May–September (dry winter) for game viewing: thin bush, animals on water, and lower malaria risk in parts of the north — confirm current guidance with a travel clinic. November–March is green, hot, birdy and considerably cheaper.
Getting there
Johannesburg (JNB) for Kruger, Sabi Sand and Madikwe; Cape Town (CPT) for the city, winelands and Garden Route. Airlink and CemAir fly JNB to Skukuza, Hoedspruit and Nelspruit daily.
Money and entry
South African rand. Many nationalities receive a visa-free entry stamp, and additional documents are often requested for children travelling with one parent. Entry rules change — confirm your own case with the Department of Home Affairs before booking.

Packing notes specific to South Africa
- Warm layers for winter drives — Lowveld mornings drop to 4°C in July.
- Neutral colours; leave camouflage at home, it is illegal for civilians in some neighbouring states.
- Binoculars 8x42, a soft duffel for light-aircraft legs, and a 15kg limit if you fly to Skukuza.
- Sunblock, wide brim hat, insect repellent for the Lowveld even in the dry season.
